How to do design interiors for the educational institutions

Designing an educational institution is not limited to its architecture. Schools and colleges with good interior designs benefit the students and community greatly as they create a positive environment to learn in.

The interiors for day care centres, schools and colleges are to be designed with a focus on creating nurturing learning spaces for children of all ages. Beyond dividing an educational space into rooms that can hold classes, this requires careful consideration of various factors :

  1. Focus on ergonomics :

Ergonomics refers to the improvement of a work environment to better suit the body. In schools and colleges, this would consist of properly designed seating, desks and workspaces for students as well as staff. As students and staff use these spaces for extended periods of time over years, ergonomically designed seating and workspaces can significantly reduce the risk of physical injury and create a supportive space. Ergonomics is not limited to classrooms, and should be considered for all spaces including laboratories, libraries, gyms and even auditoriums.

  • Provide good lighting :

Lighting, both natural and artificial, plays a role in how comfortable the spaces are for use. As natural lighting can increase energy levels and improve focus, educational institutions should try to maximize this. Natural lighting should be supplemented by adequate artificial lighting in shades of bright white and daylight in learning areas like classrooms and laboratories, and soft white lights in libraries and auditoriums. The lighting levels in institutions should be not too bright or dim, as it can cause undue stress on the eyes of the students and staff. Lighting in schools and colleges should also be easily replaceable, making maintenance easier in the long run.

  • Sound plays a role :

Good acoustics play a vital role in the interior design of playschools, schools and colleges. Classrooms should be designed to remove external noise and carry the voice of teachers and educators to each of the children. As external noise is one of the most distracting factors in a classroom experience, spaces designed with emphasis on acoustics reduce distractions and improve focus and retention abilities of the students.

  • Take care of safety :

As spaces that cater to children, safety is of utmost priority in design for educational institutions. This can be achieved by using the right materials in classrooms and sporting areas, as well as with clear and spacious pathways and emergency areas and exits.

  • Understand activities :

The design for the playschools, schools and colleges should consider the age and activities of students to create stimulating spaces for all ages. Younger children in preschools, daycare centres and schools work best with a large amount of play and activity oriented spaces, keeping the children stimulated while making it easier for the staff to take care of them. Students in schools and colleges on the other hand need more collaborative and discussion-oriented spaces that encourage interaction,  collaboration and exchange of ideas.

Well-designed schools and colleges make learning a fun experience for students while helping teachers and staff perform their jobs better. Use these tips to create amazing interiors that make students and educators happy everyday!
